The Pearl Academy saw the light of day in 2010 as a unit of Dr. Kabita Goswami Memorial Educational Trust, which was set up to commemorate Late Professor (Dr) Kabita Goswami, wife of Professor (Dr) Sushil C. Goswami, was a brilliant teacher, researcher and a strong advocate of quality education.
She secured the first position in first class in Geology (Honours) in the B.Sc.(Final) Examination,1973 of the Gauhati University from the Cotton College, Guwahati. She was awarded Gold Medal by the Guwahati University for securing first position in the first class in the M.Sc. (Final) Examination, 1974 of the Gauhati University. After her Master’s, she got admitted into the Petroleum Technology Department of Dibrugarh University from where she obtained a first class Post Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology in the year 1977. Thereafter she was awarded UGC fellowship with which she pursued her doctoral research in the field of organic geochemistry at the Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University under the guidance of Late Dr. M. M. Saikia who was a renown geoscientist working as the Head of the Geoscience Division of the then Regional Research Laboratory, a CSIR laboratory located in Jorhat, Assam. The Dibrugarh University awarded her the Ph.D. Degree in 1984.
She won a Commonwealth Academic Fellowship through a national level competition and worked under the guidance of Dr. Richard Tyson as a post doctoral research fellow at the Petroleum Geochemistry Division of the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England during 1994-1996.
In 1984 she started her teaching career in the Dibrugarh University as the lecturer in Applied Geology. She was promoted to the position of Reader and Head of the Department of Applied Geology, Dibrugarh University in 1997. The Dibrugarh University elevated her to the position of Professor of Applied Geology in the year 1998.
In the academia, she was known for her valuable research in the field of Petroleum Geology. She had several outstanding research publications to her credit. Besides national geoscience conferences, she presented some of her research findings at International Geoscience Conferences held in Moscow, Russia (1984), New Delhi, India (1992), Karachi, Pakistan (1994) and Colombo, Sri Lanka (1995).
She prematurely expired on the 6th of March, 2000 at the age of 47 in Lucknow, U.P.
